My Travel Story

by: Kendra Pankow Start Date: Apr 14, 2015 - End Date: Aug 11, 2015
My name is Kendra Pankow and I am a current sophomore at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin pursuing dual degress: a B.A. in International Development and a B.M. in Music Education.

Like some, I have never had a great desire to see the sights of Europe; instead, East Africa has been my dream. Because of personal relationships with people who have served in that area and who have emigrated from East Africa, this area has been on my heart since a young age and it has been a dream of mine to spend time within their cultures.

I will finally fulfill this dream during the fall, 2015, semester. I will be studying at Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda and living with a host family nearby. There, I will attend courses important for my International Development degree and volunteer in a non-profit organization within a nearby city to learn how to practically address and meet various needs.

I cannot wait to see more of God’s beautiful creation, to learn from more of God’s children, and experience a new way of living.  Some of the “new” will be hard, such as living without running water and showering from a bucket, but I’m just as excited about those opportunities as I am about learning and serving.

I have often prayed about life as a missionary – serving and living life among different people groups.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to gain experience and more intentionally prayerfully consider living in a nation such as Uganda for a significant part of my life. I hope to pursue a career that integrates my faith, talents, and interests to interact in community with others and support growth and development, integrating music and worship as a tool of empowerment.

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve." - Mark 10:45
