My Travel Story

Education is one of the most important investments we can make in people and our future.  Education empowers, inspires, and is crucial for reducing poverty and inequality.  I passionately believe education is a human right and justice that should be secured for everyone.  As a kindergarten teacher in Chicago Public Schools, I work every day devoting time and energy towards empowering students to become lifelong learners who challenge, question, and learn about the world around them.  This summer in Uganda, I hope to support Pangea Educational Development, PED, in making education a sustainable reality for Ugandan students.  My time spent in Uganda will be split between building a school and participating in a collaborative conference with teachers from Uganda’s PED schools.

Right now there is no stability within Uganda’s current education system.  The most challenging thing is that it costs money to go to school.  Students pay school fees not only for student uniforms, books, and food; but also teacher’s salaries and the school’s operations.  As small as these school fees are, many students are not able to afford them.  On top of financial constraints, some PED students were of those abducted and forced to fight as child soldiers, others have been left as orphans or vulnerable young people living in a post-crisis state scarred by years of war.  Despite these challenges, all PED students seek a better future.  A better future that can only be met through development.

While organizations around the world work to improve the quality of education through charitable giving, what inspires me most about PED is their ability to extend beyond just providing resources to schools.  PED not only provides support, but more importantly, works towards EMPOWERING schools to become financially self-sustainable through projects that equip each school with the tools to manage their programs in the future.

As a volunteer, I hope to share my joy for education in profound and new ways.  I hope to be reminded of the limitless bounds seen when kindness is combined with passion.  I hope with your support we can make an investment, big or small, that helps aid Ugandan students and our world for future successes.  Please help me support Pangea Educational Develop in making education a sustainable reality for Ugandan students so we can continue to thrive, grow, and promote positive change within individuals, their communities, and our world.
