Is your FundMyTravel campaign goal amount too high or too low? Setting a goal amount for your campaign can be hard, especially if you don’t know where to start or how much to ask your donors for. Below are a few ways you can get started on setting a reasonable goal amount for your campaign and get the most out of your fundraising.

Consider your network

Your core group of family and friends are going to be the initial funders of your campaign. Can they help you hit at least 30% of your goal amount? By sharing your campaign on social media and through emails you will be able to reach your core group of friends and family. These people will be the ones helping you raise most of the funds necessary to travel. Your core group of family and friends may also be able to help you reach a larger audience if they share it on their own pages, which is how campaigns go viral!

Don’t overwhelm your audience

A goal amount that is too high might seem impossible to potential donors and make them think twice about helping your campaign. You can always increase your goal amount as you get more funding as well. So don’t worry if you think your goal amount is lower than what you hope to fundraise because there is no perfect number for every campaign. That being said, we have noticed campaigners who raise between $1,000 and $3,000 have a better chance of reaching their goal. But don’t let this deter you from setting a higher goal amount!

Let people know what you’re doing offline

It’s important to tell potential donors what else you are doing in order to pay for your trip. Have you used financial aid? Did you save your summer job money for the last three years? Are you using  holiday and birthday gifts until the end of time? When people understand how much you’ve already funded yourself, they will see your online campaign as a part of the total cost. The adventure registry is a great place to let your donors know all the work you have already done for your campaign. For more tips on how to use the adventure registry, check out this blog post.

You can always exceed your campaign goal amount

Your FundMyTravel page doesn’t have a donation limit, so even if you hit your goal you’ll still be able to raise money. In fact, people are more likely to contribute to campaigns that are at least 90% successful because they know the campaigner has worked hard and trust the backing of so many donors.

Check with your program

Your program is a great resource to see how much you should estimate to spend in your time studying, interning, volunteering, or teaching abroad. Often your program will tell you how much you should plan on estimating you will spend on housing, the program fees, and other travel expenses. So check with your program provider and see if they have a budget planner on their website. If they do not you can always look to the web to see suggestions on how much you might spend in your time abroad.

Whatever goal amount you decide is best for your campaign, make sure you are actively trying to promote it. Don’t forget to complete your profile as well as fill out the donor rewards and the adventure registry.
