Greenland on a Budget – Customize Your Own Adventure

The cheapest way to travel the world is to organize your own adventure. Skip travel agencies and travel packages, and book flights in advance. Greenland is a stunning off-the-beaten path travel destination. The beautiful Arctic island is an autonomous Danish country that may not be a first travel option for conventional travelers. But if you’re eager to explore landscapes and territories you’ve only seen in movies, then Greenland is the answer.

An overview

First thing’s first: Greenland is not the cheapest travel destination. However, there are ways to cut back on costs and enjoy the journey without breaking the bank. The raw allure of the wildlife, the scenery, and the places of interest are sublime. As soon as you arrive, you’ll come across unfenced wilderness. There are no roads in Greenland, and the best way to move around is on foot or with a dogsled. Sure, there are always helicopters that can take you places, but the air rides are pricey.

Don’t expect any crowded cities as Greenland has a very scarce population. Most people live on the west coast where you’ll come across many welcoming villages and beautifully-colored cottages. The mountain scapes, fjords and glaciers of the island define its territories. Adventurers are more than welcomed to try rock climbing, kayaking or salmon fishing. The island’s culture, customs and traditions are fascinating.

Get a map

Now that you’re convinced that traveling to Greenland is a must-do this year, it’s time to pack your bags and venture into the wild. Pack wisely! Proper winter gear is fundamental. It’s not worth using your phone to find the main attractions because you probably won’t get a signal. Get a map instead.

Steer clear of organized trip if you’re traveling on a budget. With a map, you can arrange a trip yourself. Before leaving, ask the locals about the weather conditions. In Greenland, it’s best to be prepared. Ilulissat is a great place to start. The region is one of the most accessible on the island, and most of the trekking routes are marked. Carry a thermostat with you, a compass, and food.

Lodge at a hostel, not hotel

Hotels are expensive in Greenland, and don’t expect to find that many. In fact, many people courageous enough to come to this amazing island do it for the thrill and not for the amenities. They come to see the icebergs, explore the ice forests and trek the mountains to catch the aurora or the midnight sun.

Hostels are a lot more convenient. They’re not fancy and most types feature bunk beds. That shouldn’t be a problem if you travel in a group. Hardcore adventurers who know what they’re doing and have traveled in extreme conditions before won’t hesitate to carry a tent with them. But if you’re inexperienced, you probably shouldn’t do it. There are comfortable hostels in Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat; one of their main benefits is that you have access to a kitchen. This way, you can prepare your own meals and save even more without compromising the quality of your adventure.

Kangerlussuaq is a great region to explore. If you want to move faster, you can rent a bike. The famous Russell glacier is located 25 km away from the main road, and the ride is pleasant and accessible. Travelers are advised to befriend the locals. They can recommend  places and advise you on where to go. A lot of people in Greenland smoke cigarettes; but they’re incredibly expensive. Bring a carton with you and use them to buy yourself free rides. It will surprise you to see how much you can do with a pack of cigarettes.

Overall, Greenland is a spectacular travel destination. It’s not the most conventional place to explore, but it’s worth exploring at least once in a lifetime. The rugged territories, unspoiled paths and trails, beautiful people, and endless wildlife will exceed all your expectations. Make plans well in advance, and get ready for amazing Greenland holidays packed with adventure every step of the way.
