Cancun is easily the hottest tourist spot in Mexico. With stunning beaches and plenty of places to explore, it’s easy to see why. Unfortunately, many travelers are put off by this destination because of the costs. It’s largely considered that Cancun is quite expensive for tourists.
However, this isn’t strictly true as you can easily explore Cancun on a budget. To figure out how here’s my short and helpful guide:
Cut Down on Transport Costs
You can eliminate a lot of spending by cutting down on your transport costs around the city. Choose buses over taxis as it’s well known that taxi fares can be pretty high during peak tourist season. Also, try walking to as many places as possible. You’ll be amazed at how many great tourist attractions are all within walking distance of the main city.
Avoid Hotels and Stay in An Apartment
Most people choose to book a hotel for their stay in Cancun. However, they can be really expensive and slap on loads of extra costs such as extortionate room service and breakfasts. Save a lot of money by booking an apartment instead. You don’t have to book something luxurious and crazy, a simple studio will be fine for one or two people. An apartment is cheaper to pay for, and you can also buy and make your own food for a lot less than paying for hotel breakfasts.
Make Good Use of Deals
When you’re at home, it’s common to look for great restaurant deals whenever you feel like eating out. However, nobody seems to do this on holiday. Cancun has plenty of daily deals and even has a Groupon site you can use too. Have a look online before you go out to spot any restaurants with deals. This cuts down the costs when eating out, but also ensures you don’t miss out on the authentic Mexican cuisine.
Books Any Tours Beforehand
There are plenty of tours you can go on in and around Cancun, including a visit to one of the wonders of the world; Chichen Itza. I recommend you book any tours online way in advance of your visit. The earlier you book, the cheaper it will be. Plus, it means you can then sort out transport and book bus or coach tickets earlier too, which will also be cheaper in advance.
Use the Local Currency
If you’re exploring Cancun on a budget, I highly suggest you bring cash with you. Exchange your money at home and bring some Mexican pesos. By paying in cash, you avoid paying for card fees or dealing with bad exchange rates. It can save you a lot of money.
Explore the City for Free
Cancun is such a beautiful city, and there are loads of natural sights you can see and enjoy, mainly along the coastline and beaches. So, instead of paying loads for tourist attractions, why don’t you go out and explore the city for free? Go for long walks on the beach and really get to know the beauty of Cancun. You’ll see so much of the city and won’t have to pay a dime.
Follow my advice if you want to explore Cancun without breaking the bank. You’ll be amazed at how much money you can save if you just make a couple of changes to your approach.
