This study abroad course taught by Dr. Helaine Alessio in Gambia, West Africa. "Health Perspectives in the Gambia" provides students the opportunity to learn about culture and healthcare in a medically underserved country. Students will be working hands on with medical professionals and locals in Gambia for two weeks over the Summer Semester. While in The Gambia, students will visit the leaders of the following health organizations (depending on availability):

Ministry of Health and Social Welfare
World Health Organization
Peace Corps
U.S. Embassy
A large city hospital
A small remote hospital upriver
St. Johns School for the Deaf
National Nutrion Agency
Vision Center
Dental Clinic
Hospital for Women, Infants and Children
Medical Research Council (similar to Doctors without Borders)
Gambia National Museum

Other visits to health agencies and Gambia University are possible.

As for activities, students will stay at the Tendabe resort for an overnight, where they will sleep in huts and go on a riverboat ride. There will be a Kunte Kinte Island-riverboat ride to Slavery Museum and home of Kunte Kinte from Alex Haley’s book, "Roots".
