I am studying abroad in New Zealand next winter and am raising money to send myself there!  It is an incredible action packed program focusing on culture, nature, and adventure!  My study abroad will also serve as my Delta College Capstone Experienctial Learning component of the Delta College Program.  You can read more about the program by following this link!

Application Study Statement:

Ever since I was a little girl the idea of traveling the world was always on my mind.  I craved adventure, and have always tried to learn through experience.  When I entered Brockport as a Freshmen I immediately searched through the Study Aboard website very curious of the different programs I could choose from.  I read a lot about some amazing experiences, but when I read about the New Zealand International Study of culture and leisure I was hooked.

I love to hike, and know that I am my happiest when surrounded by nature.  I love how the itinerary for this program includes so much nature and adventure.  It is action packed but also culture based which I think is the best combination.  I don’t just want to see New Zealand, but I want to know what it’s like to live there.  I honestly don’t know much about the culture or history of the island, but this trip gives me the perfect opportunity to learn first hand.  In order to be a global citizen I need to understand every walk of life.  I really think this program will do a fantastic job of broadening my horizons.

I am an exercise science major at Brockport, so I think that the active aspects of this trip will also pay great benefit to my career path.  I want to be a physical therapist, but more than that I want to bring the benefits of exercise to people.  I want to serve as a role model to others as someone who isn’t afraid to take risks, to try new things, and to experience the world with an active role.

I am also currently a sophomore in the Delta College program at Brockport.  If accepted, I would like to use this trip as my capstone experiential learning component.   The Delta College encourages all students to study abroad because it enhances our education immensely.  Since this study aboard includes so many exciting nature and culture aspects I know it would be easy for me to keep a very detailed journal of my experiences.  It is hard to say what specifically I will take away from this program, but I know that whatever I discover will benefit me because I am extremely interested and believe in learning through doing.

I hope to find greater independence because I have never traveled without my family before, and I hope to discover different ways people there exercise.  It is considered the adventure capital of the world, so with that comes to me a connotation of a healthy active society.  I hope to bring back to the United States some ideas of how I can inspire others to have a more active life that is united with nature.
