My Travel Story

by: Leann Stallard Start Date: Feb 20, 2018 - End Date: Jun 14, 2018
I recently found an amazing opportunity to volunteer abroad this Summer of 2018 and gain live teaching experience while helping non-native English speakers become fluent. I will be teaching in Hungary and Poland through the Angloville program. The only obstacle I must overcome is my financial situation. I am a college student. I waitress and I take full time classes. I make enough money to buy groceries and pay my rent. There is not much left to save for my travel expenses. But this is the next step towards living my dream, and I am determined to make this happen!

I am a 21 year old woman from a small Midwestern town in the U.S.A. I never had the opportunity or the finances to travel, but I did have books. I read avidly about far off places and dreamt of going on grand adventures. I have a passion for words and a love for people. Growing up, I was gifted in reading and writing. I realized early on that I enjoyed teaching even more. I tutored throughout school, which gave me great satistaction and a sense of purpose.

After a year at University, I decided I had waited long enough to see the world. I was at the age that I could make things happen if I was willing to work for it- so I worked. During a year off from schooling, I held down three jobs while taking online classes and saved up my money. I bought a plane ticket to Europe and travelled through 8 countries that Summer. It was the time of my life, and it instilled in me a stronger lust for life than I’d ever experienced before. I gained trust in my capability to live life as I choose, with joy and purpose. After this experience, I came back to school, determined to figure out a way to combine my passions into a way of life as well as a viable career path.

One morning, I stumbled across an article from one of my favorite travel bloggers. She wrote about teaching English as a foreign language in Hanoi, Vietnam. A lightbulb went off. This was what I had always dreamed of! A plausible career path that combined my love of language, reading, writing, and travel. It offered a way to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others with my talents. I immediately enrolled in a TEFL certification course. I became certified and then searched for opportunities to gain teaching experience as soon as possible. I plan to gain TEFL teaching experience while finishing my B.A. in Social Psychology. After I obtain my degree, I will take all of my knowledge and field experience to a school abroad. I plan on teaching for two to four years in various countries before attending graduate school. I will recieve a Master’s Degree in TESOL or Administrative Education.
