My Travel Story

Hello, my name is Tina. I am a passionate girl and am excited to see what the world has to offer me. At the age of 14, my parents sent me to US alone for a better education and hope that it will eventually lead me to a better life. At the age of 17 I came back to China to become a volunteer at Panda Conservative Base, taking care the giant pandas recused from the wild. Then I came back to my school in the US to share my experiences in Sichuan and to raise awareness. When I was 18, I decided to go to Italy during Spring Break as a birthday gift to my 18 year-old self. That trip changed everything. I came back from the trip with the ambition to travel the world. I want to meet the people and feel the air on every single soil on the planet.

My goal is to connect people from all around the world in the most traditional way-- meeting people. I want people to leave their news on the Internet and actually go out and shake another person's hand. When they look into each other’s eyes, they will see more welcoming smiles than prejudice, ignorance, and termism than they used to assume from watching the "news".

I truly believe that all the human beings are essentially the same; it is their environment and different circumstances in the history shaped their cultures, national personalities and the differences we see today. I want to go to different places to breath their airs and to understand their unique cultures. It is easier to sympathize when you are looking at what the local people is looking. I believe it is the best way to bridge two different cultures and bring people from different background closer together.

When I found out about Semester At Sea, I immediately know the value of it. Semester At Sea will give me a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to explore the world in such unique way. Throughout 4-month journey, I will take 15 credits classes, land on 12 international destinations. We will have faculty-led trips and service projects that make a difference. Semester At Sea will make what I want to do become what I will do! Being able to travel while fulfill academic requirement, to study with students with simialr passion and to truly understand and change the world is why I am SO eager and excited to join!

If I had the chance to go, I will make the most out of it and make this experience something that I would want to talk about in my age of 40’s, 50’s and even 60’s and still feel very passionate and grateful.

Thank you so much for reading my “speech” to this far.
Any amount of donation is a huge encouragement for me!
Your support will give me more confidence and hope that my journey will continue and sail farther.
