In March 2018, I will be traveling on a mission trip to Guatemala with Hearts In Motion. Hearts In Motion plans short term mission trips to Guatemala. They implement programs and utilize funding and sponsorships to make a difference for those living in poverty in the U.S., Central, and South America. They strive to impact communities as well as provide an enriching experience for the volunteers. With the doctors down in Guatemala, shadowing surgeries, helping with clinical work, and working with patients are all experiences that become invaluable to have when I apply to medical school, and eventually even further my career in the medical field.

Growing up, all I have ever wanted to do was help others. I feel as if it is my higher purpose to serve others which is why I am currently pursuing a career in the medical field. The impact to be had on this community is tremendous. I would be able to help out doctors and nurses care for patients of all ailments. Being down there and volunteering will help take care of patient physical health, as well as mental health because they know other people do care for them and their well-being. I am going to travel the world to show those in need that I do care and that I am making a difference for them. I am currently a Human Anatomy Teaching Assistant so I pride myself on my knowledge of the human body. Given this oppurtunity, I would be helping people in need, gaining experience in a medical work space, and also have the chance to test myself. I feel that if I can conquer this obstacle of applying my knowledge in a real life situation, then I can conquer anything and help anyone that comes my way.

One of my closest friends is my little brother. He always has my back and I always has his. I am sure there are plenty of families down in Guatemala that look out for each other, but it is hard to help a family member when the cause is a disease or ailment that you do not know how to treat yourself. Thinking about how I would feel helpless if I could not do anything for my brother, were he to become deathly ill or just not having enough food,  makes me feel nauseous and miserable. This oppurtunity is a chance for me to be someone else's older brother, who has the power to help. I want to help anyone, just like how I would want someone to help my little brother when he stumbles.

Thank you so much! For any amount given, small or large, every bit helps. Being a part of this program will surely help my future endeavors and goals. This oppurtunity to be even considered to go is a huge honor and will be life-changing for me and, more importantly, those in Guatemala.
