WASH Institute - Urban Technical Program Internship!
My Travel Story
This summer I have accepted an internship with the WASH Institute in New Delhi, India. This institute does amazing work with Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Education intiatives in India, particualrly the federal government's Swachh Bharat Mission to clean up the country.
My internship focused on the Urban Technical Assistance Program, where I work with communities to bring functioning toilets, sanitation education, and techncal training to their areas. Swachh Bharat's Mission is to make India 100% ODF (open defecation free).
I chose this internship as an extension of my environmental science studies becasue I am passionate about this planet and the way we interact with it. While a lot of the more glamorous conservation work deals with parks and natural spaces, the real frontier for the environmental fight is in the cities, and I believe that our future depends on how we manage our infrastructure. Sometimes, if you really care about the water quality of a river or the health of an ecosystem, you have to get down and dirty with the number one water pollutant - human waste and excrement. While it is not as picturesque as mountains and coral reefs, I strongly belief that the work I do here is critical to the environmental movement and the future health of our planet.
