My Travel Story

by: Cayla Collett Start Date: Oct 18, 2017 - End Date: Apr 17, 2018

The quality of the earth is steadily declining as it tries to keep up with the demands of society. Many theories are commonly disputed as to how humans are affecting the wellbeing of earth. However, as populations increase, as do our dependency on its land and resources with little consideration for additional life. Ultimately, habitats are being lost, ecosystems are being polluted, and the climate is changing. “Unless greenhouse gas emissions are severely reduced, climate change could cause a quarter of land animals, birdlife and plants to become extinct.” (Penman, 2014) Nothing will decrease the amount of resources humans require, however the effect of using the resources can be minimalized. It is my purpose in life to protect and preserve all life through the power of knowledge. In May of 2018, I will be graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a Bachelors of Science in Physics. I will then be pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with dreams of researching the reuse of carbon dioxide gas emissions. Graduate School is a substantial endeavor that will dictate the rest of my life and equip me with the knowledge to make a difference. Without seeing the world; however, my views and opinions about the world have no perspective. I can’t possibly have a true appreciation for the beauty, culture, and relationships the world has to offer unless I experience it. I have decided to embark on a journey of self-discovery to gain a larger appreciation for life, before beginning graduate school. To do this, I will be partaking in EF College’s Ultimate Earth Tour in which I will travel to 18 cities across the world with 30 other college students for 56 days. As one can imagine, this is a costly endeavor. Because of this, I am turning to friends, family, and supporters to help fund the experience which will ultimately help me save the world!
