The goal of this trip is to study the complex interplay between modern and traditional medicine. We will be shadowing doctors at Johannesburg, and visit the surgical rooms where the first human heart transplant was performed, in Cape Town. We will then contrast these modern health institutions with herbal markets and traditional healing centers in and outside Durban. Lastly we will stop at Pretoria to evaluate our experiences in a historical and political contexts. Overall this trip is the highlight of exaclty what I want to study, and only peaks my interest in the medical field. This is a life-changing opportunity as an undergraduate that I'm fighting for. I have always been drawn to human health studies, and never thought that I would have the opportunity to actually participate in one. This study abroad is and has been on the top of my list. For me it presents an opportunity to think outside of what I am used to. In sum, this program will allow me to gain an experience of a lifetime that will only add fuel my passion for study in this field.
