My Travel Story

by: Sarah Goebel Start Date: Jan 16, 2016 - End Date: Apr 24, 2016
This summer I would like to attend the Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy for three months through SAI. This will help me reach my career goals as well as a few of my own personal goals by allowing me to take classes for my Italian minor, providing an opportunity to experience life abroad, and helping me improve my Italian language skills.

I am immensely interested in other cultures and have decided to pick up an Italian minor because of this. I have always wanted to one day become fluent in a language and after my first Italian class I knew that Italian was the language for me. This summer I will embark on a study abroad experience in Florence. While there I plan to become completely immersed in Italian culture by taking several classes to work towards my minor. The classes I will take are about the culture and way of life in Italy. I am also enrolled in an art and architecture class that will include field trips to local museums and important landmarks. What better city to learn about art than the home of Michelangelo’s David? I also plan to form connections with an Italian family in Florence. SAI offers several student clubs upon arrival, one of which is called the “Family Program”.  This program allows you to be paired up with an Italian family that will “adopt” you for the entirety of your program.

Right now I am working towards obtaining a PhD degree so that I can one day perform clinical medical research. My dream would be finding a way to combine my research goals with my love of other cultures and traveling. I have started looking into applying to programs for research in Italy, which would require living abroad 9 months at a time. This summer, although it will only be three months, would help with determining if choosing a career that includes living abroad would be something I am truly interested in.

I am incredibly excited for my study abroad experience and believe through the classes I will take, the experience abroad I will gain, and the interaction with an Italian family I will have will help me attain my personal and career goals.
