Spanish & Medicine in Peru
My Travel Story
Hello!
I have been accepted to the ECELA Medicine in Peru program. I will spend 9 weeks immersed in the culture of Peru and shadow doctors. My career goal is to become an Obstetrician/Gynecologist so this experience would be very valuable to me. But most importantly, I need this experience in Peru so that I can learn how to practice medicine within a Spanish-speaking population. Did you know that most Spanish-speaking patients will not accept treatment from non-Spanish speaking doctors? It makes a lot of sense because a language barrier makes it hard to communicate all your needs and wants to someone, however, this cannot be the case in hospitals. In order to effectively treat a patient, doctors need to have open and honest communication with their patients. This responsibility shouldn't fall on the patients, so doctors should improve their language abilities and this initiative begins with me. I'm going to be a bilingual doctor and break down the barriers that prevent me from treating any of my patients, but I need your help to do so. Please help me raise the money, so I can start on this amazing journey!
