My Travel Story

As many of you know mental health can be a real struggle for many people but outside of the United Kingdom, it can be a lot harder for societies to accept and treat mental illnesses.
Sri Lanka’s health sector has an excellent reputation, but lags behind in one crucial area of service provision – that of mental health. The suicide rate for males is 44.6 per 100,000 population and for females is 16.8 per 100,000 population and that is pretty scary. This situation was further exacerbated by the severe emotional and psychological damage caused by three decades of violent ethnic conflict, which came to an end in 2009, and the unprecedented tsunami of 2004.
By volunteering 5 weeks of my time to helping those with mental health struggles, I hope to make a difference.

My schedule is as follows:
Monday: Lesson Planning & Youth Teaching
Tuesday: Psychiatric Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre
Wednesday: Youth Teaching & Children's Teaching
Thursday: Special Needs Work & Youth Teaching
Friday: Special Needs Work

As you can see, there is a range of services I will be helping and I am so passionate and dedicated about doing so.
Not only do I have to pay for flights, visas and insurance but I need to pay for my placement and this in total can range between £2000-£3000.
I am asking you all so kindly to donate an amount to help me get to Sri Lanka and make a difference!
