To Whom It May Concern,

I am very excited to tell you that I have the opportunity to participate in a unique educational program that is being hosted by the Center for Hmong Studies at Concordia University to learn about the people, culture, and history of China, in particular, the Hmong.  But, I need your help.  The trip will take place from December 25, 2016 to January 10, 2017.

The education program takes students to Guizhou Province, the home to over four million Hmong.  It is also the place where numerous uprising by the Hmong took place in the early 1700s and 1800s.   This journey is not a vacation. It is an intense academic ten-day experience where we will be traveling to the sites of historical occurrences and visit more than 30 Hmong subgroups. We will be studying in the villages, at museums, historical sites and other venues, and have the unique opportunity to interact with many of the residents who lived there, where they can share with us regarding their experiences living in China. We will also be meeting with Hmong scholars and students from Guizhou University and the Miao Study Association of Guizhou.

The main reason I want to go on this journey is because I want to know about the roots and history of the Hmong people in China. I want to see, to experience, and to understand where the Hmong comes from. Additionally, I want to know more about how they live and how they differ from us in America. This will be a lifetime of learning for me as a Hmong Studies Minor student here at CSP, as well as an aspiring writer.

The tuition for the educational journey is $3,500 - $3,700. This covers the airfare, the lectures, meals and lodging, entrance to museums, books and curriculum, and security. But I cannot afford to pay the tuition myself.  This is why I am asking for your help.  Your donation helps students like me go on the trip. No donation is too small and because the Center for Hmong Studies at Concordia University is a nonprofit organization, your donation is tax deductible. You can learn more about the Center for Hmong Studies and Concordia University by visiting the website at: www.csp.ed/hmongcenter.

I cannot thank you enough for any assistance you can give me and if you cannot help I thank you for your time in considering my request.

Sincerely,

Shoua Xiong
