My Travel Story

I am a second year mental health nursing student and I have been offered to undertake a volunteer position with SLV.Global in Bali next August where I will be working with individuals of all ages with mental health illnesses and learning disabilities.

In Bali, I will be teaching children and young adults English, performing various physical and mental activities with children with learning disabilities, working with individuals in a psychiatric hospital as well as learning about non-Western approaches to healing the mind.

I have worked with individuals with mental illnesses and/or learning disabilities before so I know what to expect. However, I think this experience will differ from my past work in so many ways. I will be in a different culture, working with people that speak a different language, and I am away from the Western culture of treatment.

This is a unique opportunity for me to develop my skills and gain important and invaluable knowledge and experience that will help me in my future career. I feel that this can enable me to be more person-centred in the care that I give as I will learn how to work with individuals through the barriers.

I feel very grateful for this opportunity and realise how treasurable this experience will be, both for me and the future work I will do in the UK.
