My Travel Story

by: Alondra Vazquez Start Date: Oct 23, 2017 - End Date: Feb 22, 2018
Hello, my name is Alondra Vazquez and I am a current student at Yale University. I am a low-income, first-generation student on full financial aid at Yale and I was hoping to help on a Volunteers Around the World trip to the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, the price for the trip is far beyond anything I can afford, so I was hoping I could gain some help to still attend. The trip VAW is setting up is committed to having volunteers help doctors provide basic care to areas who do not have access to medical care and provide health education to children.

The money donated would help me pay for my plane ticket, the programs cost (lodging, transportation within the country, helping doctors), and medical supplies. Through this opportunity, I would be able to shadow doctors and most of all help people who would otherwise not have access to things like shots or basic medicine like pain relievers. My own family in Guatemala has benefitted from similar medical outreach. I know that it meant a lot for them to have access to care that they could not have afforded otherwise or even get to because of lack of transportation and availability of hospitals or clinics in their region. I would be overjoyed and very grateful to have the chance to give that same help to others like it was given to my family.  Nevertheless, I benefit from state health care and I know I am lucky to live in a place that affords me that care, but these people do not have that luxury, so any help I could give back even temporarily is big compared to nothing.

The trip requires payment installments in this coming month of November, so any help would be much appreciated! I have never been able to participate in projects such as this one and many other things because of my lack of funds, but I would love to gain the experience of helping others as I have been helped many times through different ways. I would like to inspire the people I am helping to keep persevering because if I could make it to where I am coming from a family who has experienced the same conditions then they can also keep working for a better life so their kids can do what I would be helping them with and all this with the help of your donations!
