In May 29th 2017 I will be travelling to Sri Lanka as part of a 5 week mental health placement with SLV global. I will be working in a rehabilitation centre, in a psychiatric hospital, with children with special needs and with vulnerable adults.

I chose to volunteer in Sri lanka because it is such a beautiful country full of culture but the mental health support available is pretty scarce, in which there is a  lack of formally qualified mental health professionals. The aim of volunteering  is to work alongside mental health professionals and provide stimulation and human interaction to patients in order to improve their wellbeing and self esteem. I enjoy helping others and have volunteered for other causes such as Sue ryder and Douglas Macmillan in the past.

Mental health and illness is an issue close to my heart, having suffered from mental illness myself as well as close family, this has inspired me to help others who are also suffering. In the future I wish to pursue my interest in Psychology and study clinical psychology.

I feel this once in a lifetime opportunity will allow me to gain a real insight into the world of a  clinical psychologist, an opportunity which is very difficult to comeby in the mental health sector.
