Alyssa's SLV Mental Health Placement 2018
On the 21st May, 2018, I will be heading to Sri Lanka to take part in a 4 week mental health placement. I will be joining a group of volunteers as part of the student run SLV team. This organisation recruits psychology students to work in a variety of countries: Sri Lanka, Bali and India. Across all, they provide experience in the mental health sector involving hands on work with people of all ages and all abilities.
Our first week will be a training week to prepare us and teach us new methods of working with people from different cultures with varying abilities. The following three weeks involve a variety of tasks, including working with people with mental health issues and conducting therapeutic interventions for these patients. I will also be teaching english to children of all levels and adults in the community, leading group tasks and activities. With the language barrier and working with children, most tasks will involve creativity- with music, dancing and art being a key way to communicate. On top of this, we will be attending workshops that focus on global mental health, which will be educational and help us make the most of our experience in Sri Lanka.
During the week i will be staying with other members of my volunteering group in a home of a Sri Lankan family, while the weekends are breaks of jungle trips, travelling, and learning more about the culture.
All communities SLV provide placements for lack the required resources to work with individuals with mental health issues. The experiences had with new cultures and people, growing professionally and personally, come second to the positive impact SLV teams have on the communities. This is something I can't wait to be a part of.
I would really appreciate any donations, big or small, and all money will go directly into funding for my placement. I will be doing different things throughout the year, such as sponsored runs, to help raise money for my trip- so I will keep you updated on these via Facebook. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about my placement, if you have any questions about it I have attached the SLV website to this site or feel free to contact me!
