Send Stasha to Learn Chinese!
I am currently an undergraduate student at Chico State, working toward a double major in International Relations and Asian Studies, as well as a minor in Global Development. I spent my junior year abroad in Chiang Mai, Thailand and also traveled to six other countries including Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, China, and Burma. At Chico State, I am a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, a national honor society for political science, as well as three other honor societies. My GPA is 3.83 and I will be walking in the commencement ceremony this May!
I have made it my goal to learn Mandarin Chinese. Traveling made me realize the importance of speaking a foreign language. I decided that Chinese would be the most appropriate choice for me, as my career goal is to work in the Foreign Service dealing with policy, mainly in Asia.
So, "Why Vermont?" you are probably asking. Well, Middlebury offers an intensive 8-week program for language learning. The program is estimated as a year's worth of curriculum within a two-month period. It is so immersive, in fact, that I will be required to sign a contract to not speak English the entire time I am there!
After attending the program, I hope to spend a semester working as an intern in Shanghai, China. I want to have a comfortable grasp on the language before this so that I can spend my time abroad perfecting my conversation skills with the locals.
Thank you for taking your time to read my story! I will be using these donations to fund the tuition, room and board for Middlebury, which overall costs around $10,500. Your help, whether big or small, will be greatly appreciated!
