My Travel Story

by: Axel Wiegandt Start Date: Dec 20, 2017 - End Date: Mar 11, 2018
Hi, I’m Axel and this is my story,
Since I was little, I was lucky to have the opportunity to travel. I did a lot of exchange programs for example in Spain, Germany and Canada. So I know the experience of living in another country. I have visited many cities in Europe, as a tourist. And every time I get out of my country, I’m always exited. I love to travel and I’m a very curios person, the idea of learning new things, meting new people, learning from new cultures just amazes me.
All these countries that I have been to in Europe where wonderful and I have learned a lot from them, but recently I did a journey that changed my life: When I was working in Spain this summer, I felt the need to do something different… so I decided to go as a volunteer to South Africa. This was a spontaneous decision, completely outside my life plans. Doing a volunteering program in a far away country, and in a continent I had never been to.
Today I think that was the best decision I have ever made.
I stayed there for 5 weeks and got into a program called “Surf outreach” which was basically teaching kids of low resources how to surf. This program was created to distract kids in the afternoons to avoid them getting into gangs and doing drugs. In these 5 weeks I learned something new to me: I learned to give. All my past trips were focused in me learning and exploring, however in this one I didn't only explore, I learned how it feels to help others, to give and receive love from people you never expected. And I was amazed by these kids, they changed me… its amazing how someone that has almost nothing has that much love to give. And that’s where I learned what I want to do next and the reason I started this fundmytravel. I want to keep exploring the world and at the same time help others.
