My Travel Story

by: Hailey Thornton Start Date: Oct 26, 2017 - End Date: Apr 23, 2018
My name is Hailey Thornton and I want to study abroad in Seville Spain. I think that Seville seems to be the perfect blend of a large city with a small town feel. For a while, I have been set on going there and have done so much research into the city and it seems like a great fit. I believe that being able to study abroad and spend a significant amount of time in another country is a vital part of a complete university education. Due to the fact that we live in such a fast paced and globally centered world and economy we must know how to work with and communicate with people from all over the world. Having a cultural understanding for others and knowing that other people come from different backgrounds and have different ideas from you is the key to success throughout life. In my career and my lifetime I want to be able to understand and connect with as many people as possible. As an accounting major, I will be working with people from all over the world and with people from all over this country. Due to that, I think it is important for me to be a culturally aware person for my own career development.

When I was a junior in high school my family had a student from Germany live with us for a year. It was a totally surprising, challenging, interesting, and eye opening experience. After having him live with us and experience how our way of life was so different than what he was used to made me wonder how I would feel if I were to go abroad. From there my goal was to study abroad once I was in college. I want to travel to Spain because I have always been very intrigued and interested in the history, the culture, the food, and everything to do with Spain. I also enjoy the language and would absolutely love to become more comfortable with speaking the language. I have taken a few years of Spanish but one of my biggest goals in life and for this travel semester is to become fluent. I went on a ten day missions trip to the Dominican Republic last spring break to help orphaned kids. Through that trip I learned a lot more Spanish but I wish that I knew more because I feel like I could have connected with these kids and with the foster parents much better. I think that by studying abroad and living in a host family situation will allow me to be fully immersed into another culture and learn another language and way of life. To me my personal growth and self realization during this time will be extremely beneficial to me and to my goals throughout my life.
Thank you for your intrest and for your contribution to this experience!
