Hello everyone!! My name is Brittany and I have been accepted to study abroad in Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. I am currently a student at Arizona State University working towards my Bachelor's in Health Science in the Healthy Lifestyles Coaching program. This study abroad opportunity will allow me to gather first hand experience and knowledge about healthcare, health risks, and cultural aspects of the food in these countries. This is vital information that I will need once I am in the workforce and putting my degree to use. The United States is very culturally diverse and in order to succeed in my career, I will need to be educated on how other cultures go about their daily health needs and the resources they have been accustomed to in their native countries.
While in Iceland, I will learn about the healthcare there, visit a local cheese factory and chocolate factory to become familar with their food, and take a trip to a greenhouse at the Icelandic Ocean Cluster. Denmark will provide me with opportunity to visit street vendors at the Copenhagen street market, take a foraging and cooking class, visit multiple castles, and take a tour at the Carlsberg Brewery. During my time in Sweden, I will have the chance to investigate the history of medicine and current health trends at the Museum of Medical History, the University of Uppsala Library, and the anatomical theatre. I will also have the chance to visit a Scandanavian hospital and examine the healthcare system directly with doctors and staff. A trip to the Nobel Prize Musuem is also planned. The trip will end in Norway where I will be above the Artic Circle and experience 24 hours of constant daylight!! Exploring botanical gardens and grocery stores, a trip to a reindeer camp, and studying the Sami culture at the Artic University of Norway are some of the experiences I will have during my stay in Norway.
This study abroad program will give me the shot at investigating real world examples of how lifestyle, nutrition, climate, and available healthcare options influence disease risk. I will be able to evaluate benefits and shortcomings to healthcare systems from a cultural perspective. Understanding the impact of various cultural apsects will allow me to develop empathetic and pracitcal guidance with future patients or clients.
