My Travel Story

by: Scott Larson Start Date: Jan 23, 2018 - End Date: Jan 22, 2019
I will be going on a trip to Australia with a group of science club kids from Mandan High School in 2019. We will be in Australia for a total of 10 days. Being able to go to Australia is a huge honor. On the first day we will be going to the Sydney Opera House. On the second day the group will be visiting the beautiful Darling Harbor. The third day we will be taking surf lessons at the historical Manly Beach. The Manly Beach is actually one of the best beaches in the world! At the beach, we will be identifying star fish and other organisms that live in the environment. On the fourth day, we will be traveling to the enchanting Blue Mountains and will get to see the “Three Sisters” rock formation at Katoomba. The Blue Mountains are home to wild koala bears! We will be seeing a lot of these adorable creatures in the mountains. On the fifth day, we will be flying to Queensland and walking about a Bohemian Esplanade in the city. On day six we will visit Fitzroy Island and then see the magestic Great Barrier Reef. The beautiful reef is full of 1,500 different species of fish. The Great Barrier Reef has the Earth's largest concentration of coral. At the reef, I and the group will be snorking with a marine biologist and learn about the biodiversity of corals and marine wildlife. After snorkeling, we will visit the Fitzroy Island Rehabilitation Centre. Here we will learn about injuries to the turtles, and the rehabilitation of the endangered turtles in the reef. My main interest and hobby is animal science and nature. On the seventh day we will volunteer at the Bat Rescue Center. There, we will aid veterinarians with the care of injured fruit bats and sugar gliders. We will feed, care, and provide medical assistance to injued wildlife from the North Queensland rainforest. Later that day we will explore the shops and community of Cairns. Sadly, the trip does have to end. We will fly back into Bismarck, North Dakota where instead of reefs we have fish tanks and have stuffed animal versions of koalas. This trip is so meaninflul to me because I get to learn more about our world's problems many people don't know anything about for instance our dying coral reefs and the animals suffering from our small yet major faults. I plan to come back after 8 days of Australia and make a difference in our community by motivating people to get involved in the programs I learned from in Austrailia. I would very greatful for your help in donations and support along the way. Thank You For Reading! Much love, Sarah Larson
