My Travel Story

Hi everyone

My name is Liv Beynon, I'm 14 years old and I'm a student at Springfield School in Portsmouth. 

In August 2017 I'll be going to Kenya with a group of friends from school as part of a charity expedition with African Adventures .

African Adventures is a volunteer travel organisation and will be taking us to a place called Nakuru in Kenya where we'll be helping out in schools by teaching maths, literacy and sport and also participating in various community projects like constructing new classrooms and play areas.

The trip will be massively challenging - both physically and mentally. It will be an intensive programme of activities but we have one day off when I hope to be able to see some of the Kenyan wildlife and visit the equator.

Although it will be extremely tiring, it will be an amazing trip and I'm looking forward to my volunteer work because I know it will give me some great life-experiences, it will be character building and it will help prepare me better for later life but ultimately I know I will be doing something for other people and other communities who are less priviledged than I am.

Because this is a charity volunteering trip it is completely self-funded and I need to fundraise to cover the cost of the trip which is £1900. Raising the money to cover the cost of the trip is not easy but I have already started doing this through various activities both on my own and with some of my friends. I have been making Christmas gift tags which I will be selling to my friends and family and at Christmas Craft Fairs. I have also given up half of my pocket money every week and I've been doing extra jobs to earn a few pounds here and there. With my friends, I have done lots of bag-packing, a race night, car washing and a couple of quiz nights.

My next fundraising event will be the Sponsored 5K Santa Fun Run on Sunday 11th December along Southsea Seafront in Portsmouth.
