My Travel Story

by: Anne Lyons Start Date: Sep 26, 2017 - End Date: Mar 25, 2018
As a Quinnipiac University Finance Major, General Studies Program at ISI Florence provides me with the opportunity to gain insight into Italy’s history and culture, which will prove to be a critical skill in today’s global economy.  Having a broad understanding of the Italian economy up close and personal will provide me with a competitive advantage in my career.  It’s one thing to study about different countries and their economies in a classroom, it’s much different and extremely beneficial to live it and experience it with the local people. Learning a new language, in this case, Italian, as part of this program is a major goal of mine.  This will allow me to engage and converse with locals to get a better understanding of their home and culture. Another goal of mine would be to make friends and get to know some of the local people in Italy.  Getting to know people who have lived in this area their whole lives will provide me with so much more than just acting like a tourist the whole time I am there. They will provide insight into the culture, history, and the overall way of life that you can’t get from a book or attend classes. I truly expect this trip to be a life-changing experience for me.  I hope to grow as a person and push myself to come out of my comfort zone as it relates to meeting people and being more independent. I also hope that this trip will also help me become more open-minded.  I have lived my entire life in the Northeast region of the United States and have not had the opportunity to experience other cultures.  I am looking to better understand different ways of living and have an appreciation for them. I believe this program will provide me with great perspective as a student and will broaden my skills and understanding of the world around me.
