My Travel Story

by: Moganavalli Kattan Start Date: Feb 18, 2018 - End Date: Jun 17, 2018
The last time I volunteered for animal conservation, I knew my soul would not rest till I found my way back into the forest. I am passionate about being alive and making other people feel alive. I found my community by volunteering for animal shelters and conservation projects.

But maybe passion isn't enough. Maybe I’m not the next Nobel Laureate. But everything I’ve done so far for my zoology degree; it’s made my life worth living.

I stayed in the forests of Mauritius for a while on a conservation project with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, and one night I had dinner with the entire team of biologists; outdoors, obviously. We were talking about everything and nothing.

I connected.

Then a common house gecko walked across the edge of the table. Everybody collectively closed their mouths, eyes following the little beast’s every move.

I lived.

That’s what I want to do for the rest of my life; I want to connect, I want to live.

And now my heart is set on the ring-tailed lemurs of Madagascar. They are on the UN red list, classified as endangered. They used to be found on the island I'm from, Mauritius, but they eventually died out. I would like to become part of the team that prevents that from happening in Madagascar too.
