My Travel Story

by: Laura Filardo Start Date: Jul 5, 2016 - End Date: Nov 1, 2016
I want to introduce this as an investment. Your support goes to the future of a designer. A designer whose goal is to create a positive impact on people and the planet. I have found a path that I feel I can not only nourish my passions but also make a difference.

I will be graduating Washington State University, December 2016, with a degree in Interior Design, and with that comes study tour requirements. I have gone to Chicago, I am signed up for Paris, which starts August 1st, and I am also signed up for New York in October. These study tours are well bred and have a focus on design in an immersive and engaging way.

I am seeking help, via funding, on this last leg of my design education. These study tours mean many things to me. They are a part of my education, which is imperative to being a successful designer. Another reason is that it is important to have these experiences and opportunities that further develop me as a person. These two notions feed each other and will also make me stand out to future employers and or clients.

To help further understanding I will provide the definition of interior design, as well as in comparison to a decorator, as told by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification.

Interior design is the art and science of understanding people's behavior to      create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.

U.S. states and Canadian provinces have passed laws requiring interior designers to be licensed or registered and to document their formal education and training. Many states and provinces also specifically require all practicing interior designers to earn the NCIDQ Certification to demonstrate their experience and qualifications. By contrast, interior decorators require no formal training or licensure.

Protecting health, safety and wellbeing is the professional responsibility of every interior designer. Every decision an interior designer makes in one way or another affects the health, safety and wellbeing of the public.

To bring it full circle education is imperative to being a successful designer. Which is why these study tours are so important to my education and to me. They are critical in understanding design as it provides an opportunity to analyze, gather inspiration and cultivate innovation.

People spend 90% of their time indoors. Logic says that 90% of our world is then designed. In turn designers have a major impact on our lives. Why not invest in a designer?

My design philosophy is this. I believe in a holistic approach to design where the health, safety and wellbeing of people and the planet can be simultaneously addressed. Environments can be both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious. Design is a tool to create environments that not only serve a purpose but can create a positive impact on people and the planet. Having a holistic approach will in turn create timeless design.

I have provided links to the Paris study tour and to my portfolio I have posted on Issuu.com

Your help and support is very important to me and has a major impact on my education and my future. Even if you cannot financially contribute I am grateful for your time, belief in me, my future and the future of design.

I have listed all expenses under program fee to make it easy (this includes program fees, airfare, additional expenses, etc.). Fund My Travel does take out a fee for every donation so if you would like to donate to me directly please contact me and we can work out the details.

Thank you for your support.
