I am a passionate theatre student and theatre maker, and one of my biggest inspirations and influences is Bollywood film. My dream is to incorporate South Asian film making into my theatre and film projects in the west, and one of the best ways to do so would be to actually go and do hands-on work with a studio in Mumbai as an intern. I hope to learn everything I can about what really goes into the storytelling and production side of the industry, while also taking a closer look at the ethos and passion behind the films. I feel incredibly connected to the color and the heart behind the art form, and hope to bring back influence to put into my work here. I initially got my interest in Bollywood from my grandparents. My grandfather on my father's side was born in Hyderabad, India, and traveled to the U.S. for graduate school. When he was established, he sent for my aunts and uncles to come live here with him. Eventually, my grandmother came to the U.S. from India to marry him and they made a life together. I learned from them the importance of maintaining cultural identity, even when they are so far from home, and part of that is a loyal consumption and enjoyment of South Asian art. I've never been to India, and my desire to visit is greater than my pursuit of art, though that certainly is my main reason fo traveling to Mumbai; I feel as though part of my travel will be rediscovering my ancestral heritage. I hope to visit Hyderabad during my stay, and connect with relatives still living in India. By interning in Mumbai, I would have the incredible opportunity not only to visit, but actually live in the culture that was such a part of my childhood.
