My Travel Story

My name is Joanna Wilson and I am a 2nd Year Biological Natural Scientist. After achieving a 1st class in my first year at the University I discovered what really interested and intrigued me was the human body and how it works, particularly the brain. I decided to take psychology, physiology and pathology in Part IB and am thoroughly enjoying all three.

In the summer of 2018 I will be going on a 4 week mental health placement in Indonesia to continue looking into the mind and brain. Throughout my time on placement I will get the opportunity to work with vulnerable individuals to increase my understanding of global mental health. The first week will consist of training followed by 3 intense weeks of running workshops in one of Indonesia’s only psychiatric facilities. Along with this I will get the opportunity to work in schools and vocational training institutes to teach English to children, providing them with better career prospects and increased confidence.

This is a once in a lifetime experience that I can’t wait to take part in. The company I have booked this placement through, SLV,  value a professional culture on their placements with a view to supporting, and enhancing, current university studies.

On placement, I will be staying in an authentic Balinese village, truly immersing myself in the culture of the beautiful country.
