My Travel Story

by: Dustin Bartee Start Date: Apr 24, 2017 - End Date: Nov 9, 2017
Do you ever feel like this day to day rat race has you pulling your hair out just to get by. Yeah me too... this trend seems too normal if you ask me. Do you ever feel music is your only escape? The rhythm and melody of that certain song puts you in an almost trance like meditative state. I have spent over 1/4 of my life studying science, particularly biology and neuroscience. You may ask how does my favorite song and you studying the brain have to do with traveling? Well.....I have been playing multiple instruments since I was quite young and feel that music has played a significant role in my life along with science. This has triggered my interested in traveling the world in pursuit of correlations between music and physical healing. Cultures throughout the world have such varying diversity of music, much of which is used for healing. Music not only provides an escape for the soul, but also provides a rhymic stability for a multitude of cognitive and neurological disorders in which the underlying structure is decaying. One significant example is in Parkinsons disease, in which the decay of motor neurons lead to progressive loss of movement in individuals. Certain rhythms can spark something in the patients, allowing some individuals to dance when they normally have trouble walking. Overall, I would like to observe different cultures and study how their music is used for healing, Maybe by connecting enough dots we can find a pattern which will benefit a variety of neurological illnesses.
