My Travel Story

by: Ian Stevens Start Date: Sep 30, 2016 - End Date: Sep 29, 2017
Given that most people on hear seem to want to "help" developing communities to get a free holiday, I thought I'd skip the crap and get to the point: I want to go climbing in Patagonia, Yosemite and the Himalaya. Rather than give money to someone to take away an unskilled job from a local, why not give it to me to waste time climbing bits of rock?

In all seriousness, volunteer tourism takes jobs away from local people. Money spent on travel, accomodation and food whilst on such trips would be better donated to an international charity employing locals rather than helping Westerners feel less guilty about their oppulant lifestyles whilst "finding themsleves", whatever the hell that means (although I think its a crude translation for getting drunk and shagging people never to be seen again).

If this campaign does in fact receive any donations, I'll make sure they find their way to the Paldorje Education Fund, a campaign run by outdoor gear makers Sherpa (http://www.sherpaadventuregear.co.uk/giving-back-i54) which employs Nepalis to build schools in remote mountain villages for Sherpa children. Also, the company trains and employs native Nepalis to make some of their products. Much better than sending an 18 year old to build a school badly.
