My Travel Story

by: Mackenzie Niday Start Date: May 6, 2018 - End Date: Sep 5, 2018
I have been given the opportuniy to study abroad with the Semester at Sea program. This means that I will be spending my fall semester travelling the world on the MV World Odyssey, visiting eleven different countries, all while earning course credit. This voyage will give me an international perspective of business and world cultures. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and traveling is a passion of mine. I plan to obtain a job with an international business that will allow me to travel. This voyage is important to me, not only because of the travel and the cultures I will learn about, but also having the chance to break away and begin to understand who I am as a person.

    Hard Work Pays Off
I leave ten weeks from today for my voyage! I am so excited for this opportunity and it feels so surreal. That being said, there has been so much work that I have had to put in, in order to make this a reality. With all my school switches and changes in my major, I really had to focus on what I was doing. I took 18 credits this past spring semester, kept up with a part-time job, and was an active member and choreographer in a dance club on campus. With all of this, I was able to not only make the Dean's List, but the Ivy College of Business Dean's List as well! I am taking classes this summer to keep me up to speed and graduate on time so that I can have this amazing study abroad opportunity. Nothing comes free and I'm paying for it in more ways than one. I'm putting in the work now, so that I can enjoy life later.

    Field Programs Update!
This morning I registered for my field programs. In Ghana I will be doing the homestay and school engagement that I had mentioned before. When we get to South Africa, I will spend my first day exploring Cape Town and visiting historical buildings and landmarks, to end the day with a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain. I will end my South Africa visit with the Happy Feet Youth Project. They provide alternatives to gangs and drugs for the youth and they dance a little too. :) Next I will venture to India to visit the Taj Mahal and then relax with an Indian yoga session. In Vietnam I will explore the tunnels used by their soldiers during war. Lastly, when we get to Hawaii, I am taking part in an ocean clean up day with Sustainable Coastlines. I will also be doing some traveling with the people I meet on the ship in other countries as well. And yes, I will still be taking classes. More information to come!
