My Travel Story

by: Laura Bowler Start Date: Feb 2, 2017 - End Date: Feb 1, 2018
I'm composing an  Antarctic Symphony for Orchestra and Video to be premiered by the ( in 2019). This visual and aural experience aims to insight the audience into action and to raise awarenress about Global Climate Change.

Antarctica will be a visceral, human orchestral work exploring contemporary society's destructive relationship with our planet and the need for us to acknowledge climate change. The orchestral writing will take us through the serene beauty and the harsh brutality of one of the planet’s most extreme regions and one that is urgently at risk- Antartica.  Antarctica will incorporate video, taken from my research trip to Antarctica. The piece aims to insight the audience into action. I have been successful in gaining funding from the Finzi Trust in order to travel to Antarctica in November/December 2018 with the aim of documenting the experience through audio and video recording. My decision to do this came from my desire to create a work that used video and sounds that were recorded by myself in order to communicate the significant effect Climate Change is having particularly within this area of our planet. Although I can use stock videos and recordings, I strongly feel that the personal experience and my desire to record on multiple devices ranging from low to very high quality will give this work a more direct link to audiences. It won’t be a glossy nature documentary, it will be the brutal reality. Antarctica will be composed/created in homage to Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, who also travelled to Antarctica before writing his Antarctic Symphony 20 years ago. Max was a mentor of mine throughout my MMus and PhD and also spent his years in university education in Manchester like myself.

Antarctica will be a contemporary symphony that adopts a practice of multi-layering of art forms and music in order to expose the urgency of environmental action.
