My Travel Story

by: Natalie Kelly Start Date: Oct 22, 2016 - End Date: Mar 20, 2017
It was the beginning of the semester, and there I was, taking Ancient Greek, when my Professor told us that there would be an opportunity to go to Greece on a Travel Study trip. Of course, that sounds intriguing to anyone, but as a college student, intriguing doesn't always mean you can afford to do it.

However, it was hardly a week later when my Art professor also brought up the Greek trip, and that was when I found out that the trip wasn't just "We're going to Greece! Time for vacation!", and could actually do something for my education. As an Art student, I hadn't realized that this travel study would not only be interesting, but would also be a learning experience. The trip would count towards two different classes- one on Greek Mythology, and one an art study and travel journal. Not only did this apply to my area of study (art), but it was directly in line with what I am currently learning.

I am a full time college student, and my parents are not financially in a situation where they can even afford to help with my regular schooling costs. I work two jobs in summer, and have one on campus now, which, despite my best efforts, mainly just pays for food. While I am attempting to apply for scholarships and save money in any way I can, any help would be incredibly appreciated.

To be able to go to Greece would be such an incredible learning experience. Not only am I taking Ancient Greek this semester, but I am an aspiring art student. If I were able to go on this trip, it would help me to grow as a student, as a person, and as an artist. It would be a historical journey through Greece, allowing me to more fully understand the ancient societies and philosophies which have had such an impact on the present day. I would never be able to take this learning opportunity without the support of teachers, friends, and even strangers.

Thank you.

    A Little Progress
Due to a new scholarship, I now have several hundred dollars saved away. Even a little progress is a step in the right direction!

*The picture is of the island of Crete, which we will be visiting on the trip. Crete is the setting of several Ancient Greek myths and stories, and has great historical value.
