My Travel Story

by: Sophia Broadmeadow Start Date: Feb 2, 2019 - End Date: Jun 15, 2019
Hello my name is Sophia.

I am currently completing an undergraduate psychology degree at Nottingham Trent University. On the 12th of August 2019 I will be travelling to Sri Lanka for a month to undergo The Advanced Mental Health Placement with SLV Global.

SLV Global is an organisation that seeks to make a difference in a range of countries whereby resources are limited for those living with mental health issues. Volunteering with SLV means that I will be completing projects with people of various ages, backgrounds and abilities. The projects include using aspects such as expressive therapies (ie art or music) to allow each individual to express their emotions. This in turn will promote the main aim of the placement: to encouraging positive mental health.

I am deeply passionate about helping and improving the lives of others which I believe starts with an individual’s mental health. Other cultures respond to this area in a different way and it often receives a negative stigma. Therefore, raising awareness around the subject and providing useful methods for coping with mental health issues will promote a positive mind-set. A little impact goes a long way in an individual’s life and to be able to make this impact means the most to me.

A lot of people do not know where to access help when they are struggling or even feel like they cannot get the help they deserve. This is something I believe needs to change. Changing the community’s ideas towards mental health may allow individuals to easily gain this vital support and not feel so alone. Also helping other professionals such as teachers or clinical psychologists in Sri Lanka to come up with ideas to build a positive mind-set will be helpful to the people in the community as it will leave a lasting effect. Completing this volunteering will also give me the much needed experience to help develop my skills to become a clinical psychologist and later help improve the lives of others here in the UK.

This is a cause I strongly believe in and I would love the opportunity to make a difference, no matter how big or small. Thank you for taking your time to read, I would really appreciate any contributions towards this worthy venture.
