Hi everyone,

My name is Vivi Theuri and I’m currently doing my 2nd year of a Bsc in Genetics, Psychology and Human Physiology at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. I’ve been accepted to do an exchange program at the prestigious Hokkaido University in Japan from April to August and need your help.

I think this exchange program will be worthwhile because it is the first time I will be truly going out of my comfort zone. This will give me the chance to learn a new culture whilst growing as a person simultaneously. I will benefit from meeting fellow students from around the world. Furthermore I hope to attend the 65th  International Student Conference from 21/08/2019 to 02/09/2019 in Tokyo. The meeting will discuss urgent issues of peace and conflict, mental health etc.

About a year ago I was disappointed by failing to win the MEXT Japanese Government scholarship to write the exams in order to be selected. I became determined to learn the language from the source. The next opportunity came up this year when I applied for the Hokkaido University Short-Term Exchange Program (HUSTEP). Once again I failed to get the scholarship in spite of being accepted by the program.

The disappointment did not make me lose hope. I was determined to wing it with my own resources. I have passed the half-way point of the amount of money I would need for the program. I have been exempted from paying tuition and have raised enough for my accommodation. The process has taught me how to endure despite negative advice.

Any contribution would be greatly appreciated and there are many ways you can show your support including sharing on social media, donating, and lending your skills. Thank you to those who have already made donations through other means. ♥️
