Hi, my name is Kimiko. I'm a 19-year-old Psychology Undergraduate student at the University of Glasgow.

In July 2017, I’ll be heading to Sri Lanka for 5 weeks as a volunteer for SLV. This organisation offers placements to students to gain practical work experience in the mental health field. Those who know me well can tell you two things: I’m very passionate about mental health and my goal is to become a clinical psychologist.

Sri Lanka background:

Sri Lanka has one of the highest suicide rates of any country in the world and has increasingly high rates of depression, alcoholism, as well as substance abuse. With the ending of the 25-year long civil war in 2009, paired with the devastating tsunami in 2004, roughly half a million now suffer from serious mental illness’.

What I'll be doing:

SLV's aim is to bolster the already existing resources within the Sri Lankan mental health system. My role is to run therapeutic activities for those in community mental health settings in order to aid recovery. Alongside being able to help those with mental health issues, I'll also be teaching English to young adults and children within the local communities and be working with individuals with special needs.

Why should you donate?

By donating, you will be helping my make an irreplaceable impact on the Sri Lankan community. I will only be able to achieve this with YOUR help! I am so excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this program and I hope you can help me get there.

Thank you!

Kimiko
