My Travel Story

I remember sitting in my 7th grade social studies class and being so inspired by the words of Gandhi.  Things like "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" and "be the change you wish to see" became words I live by every day.

Later in high school, I learned of Nelson Mandela and the realities of apartheid in South Africa.  "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," were the words of Mandela that still resonate with me now.

As an educator, I have an opportunity to put all of this wisdom together into one experience that will be shared with students for years to come.

World View, a part of the University of North Carolina that promotes global learning, is hosting an intensive study visit for teachers to travel to South Africa.  We will spend two weeks walking in the footsteps of Gandhi and Mandela, while we learn about the coutry's education system, culture, and ongoing struggles with race issues.

The information I will return with in invaluable.  My experiences will be turned into instructional materials that will be available nationwide.  We have much to learn from South Africa with regards to overcoming racial issues and bridging the gaps between citizens.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but I will need your help to make it happen.  I am seeking financial support from gracious donors like yourself, who see the value in maintaining high levels of history, diversity, and global studies in our education system.

Please consider partnering with me to make education a stronger force for change in the world.
