My Travel Story

by: Jess Mazur Start Date: Nov 20, 2015 - End Date: Jan 18, 2016

I am off on an adventure. I often talk about Social Justic with my students, but now it is time to put my words into action.

I have taken 6 months off work (yes, no income) and decided to volunteer in S.E. Asia (Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia). After some looking around I found an agency who I feel confident with; who wont line their pockets with money and who work with local providers to give support to those who need it.

I need this trip and this volunteer experience as much as they 'need' me. I want to learn, grow, appreciate, value and heal.

So... what will I be doing?

I have so far been accepted into the 'Feeding the Homeless' program in Ho Chi Minh City. I will be there for 5 weeks (1 which will be over their New Year!!!). This will be done with a local initiative called The Green Lion, Vietnam. They are on facey if you want to look them up!

I will then head off to Thailands north Chiang Rai and complete the 'Outdoor Work' for 4 weeks. The initiative is called 'The Mirror Foundation'.

I am then heading to Cambodia. Here I will be either working in a school making free lunches and dinners, OR 'Teaching/Childcare' for 5/6 weeks.

At some stage during my stay I will, ofcourse, have a few little adventures along the way. I am hoping to see more of Northern Thailand, Souther Laos, and Cambodia.

Why do I want your help?

As mentioned above, I am having 6 months without paid work, AND I have to pay for my time over there.

Things suchs as:
-Accommodation
-Food
-Flights
-Visas
-Registration Fees
-Transport
-Shots before I go
-Tablet/small laptop
-Donations to the charities I am working with.

I would be forever gratefull if you would help me out in some small way, with a donation or, if local in Shepp, a free hair cut or second hand tablet/ipad with front webcam :)

I am going to put up a blog as I go on my travels and hopefully a web-blog as well.

God Bless!
Jess

Wow, what can I say!? This is just sensational. I really didnt think I would get this much and it just blows my mind. Any extra monies that I might happen to raise in these last 3 days will go to buying bulk foods and first aid supplies for the KL Soup Kitchen I am going to. I have been following them on Facebook and they just look amazing. Super excited to join them.

My bag has been packed and repacked 3 times now. One more time and I think I will be good to go. The majority of it is medication and things for incase I get sick... I keep thinking about what my friend Eliza said, 'You dont need as much as you think you do'. So this is my moto for packing. Not once have I traveled and ever worn all the clothes I had packed.
So I leave on the 31st of Jan at 1:25am. So thats 2 weeks away.... THATS 2 WEEKS AWAY!! WHAT AM I DOING????!!!!

  • 8 Days To Go On The Campaign

This week I packed up the house and moved back in with my parents..eeekk. Finally rented out my home, so at least thats one less thing I need to worry about. At least my loan will be covered while I am away.

I have also found another place that I am going to visit while overseas.

Kechara Soup Kitchen, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. You can find out some more information on them http://www.peoplegiving.org/kechara-soup-kitchen  or you can find them on Facebook, where they are always uploading photos. As it is a little less structured as the other places I am visiting (you dont stay with other volunteers, you find your own accommodation and it is mostly locals who volunteer), I think I will only do 2 weeks there.

    Bed time now,

    NIGHT!
