My Travel Story

Hello everybody.

I am a uni student in Munich living with my parents and I have a long distance boyfriend in the UK. Before the pandemic we’ve been meeting multiple times a year, but since 2020 we no longer could.

My boyfriend is an elementary school teacher and no longer works and earns as much as he normally would. He lives with his father and stepmother, who were urging him to move out for a while. Covid has severed any progress he made saving money, and their tone has only worsened. I understood that they even get violent, but I don’t know the full extent of the issues. But I do know that my boyfriend appears more and more gloomy and depressed in calls ever since UK government closed schools on January 2nd. He is stuck with his family until what now appears to be April with almost no money of his own. Lately he sometimes says he’s at his limit and he can’t take being in this environment. Naturally, we also miss each other, which doesn’t help his mental health.

I decided to move to the UK and help him get accommodation. A lot of the money I had saved up I already spent on the UK visa process (my nationality is Russian). I must mention that my own family has been not particularly financially liberal. They never allowed me financial freedom and so every job I worked at before went to our mutual family bank account.

However, my parents know and love my bf and are happy for me in the grand scheme of things. I still feel they wouldn’t let me go if they knew about my plan (and they’ll definitely won’t help me financially), but I feel like I’m obligated to do this for him.

It feels rather bizarre, but I will not rest until my bf is under my suicide watch, so to speak.

Every pound is very valuable. If I move, I’m staying long term as to not aid the pandemic and to self isolate together. At first, I need it for the plane ticket and food (we might live in his car at first), and later towards a new place to stay that’s near his school, should they open eventually.
