My Travel Story

by: Alice Blackley Start Date: Apr 10, 2017 - End Date: Aug 9, 2017
I am currently in my third and final year of my Children's Nursing degree (eek!) and am travelling out to Bali for my 4 week elective placement to volunteer, helping the local community through teaching education and health promotion to children in June/July 2017.

Above is a vlog of two people who went to Bali with the same company (Go Eco), however they did a different project to me. It gives you a good idea of the sort of thing I will be doing out there and the children I will be helping. I will also spend 30 hours+ travelling to get there, which is a scary thought as I am doing this all by myself, so this will be a completely new experience for me!

I will be taking part in a couple of different projects including:

Kindergarten Project: You will work in an informal school setting with young children between the ages of 2-5 years old who are mainly from poor villages in and around Ubud. The main focus of this kindergarten school is to get children excited about education and prepare them for primary school. You will teach basic English phrases such as simple greetings and sentence structures. By facilitating games, singing songs and creating art projects, you will prepare these children for a brighter future.

Medical Project: Lack of medical care and healthcare resources is a significant problem for the Ubud community. This project encourages and inspires local children to care more about their personal health and hygiene. This could include teaching them how to brush their teeth, wash their hands as well as how to clean their body and clothes. You will help improve the healthcare situation by running informational health sessions as well as showing them ways they can live healthier lives.

I will be volunteering monday-friday from 8:00am-18:00pm - as much as Bali will be amazing, this is not a holiday! and as you can imagine, being a student living in London money is tight so I would highly appreciate any donations you can make towards this amazing cause.

It will be a challenge and the biggest adventure I have ever been on, but I am keen to get stuck in and make a difference to the children in Bali, who do not have the luxuries that we do.

Thank you for your support xo
