My Travel Story

by: Laura Park Start Date: Nov 25, 2017 - End Date: May 24, 2018
This research and voluteering project in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa focuses on the rescue, rehbailitation, release and conservation of the local marine mammals in the area. I will be contributing to ongoing research in the area and collecting vital data in the field. As well as focusing on the marine conservation aspect of the project, I will also be contributing to the local community by volunteering in building schools for the local children and helping with certain aspects of education, beach clean ups for the local people and tree planting/alien tree removal for the local environment. As well as any other opportunities that arise whilst I am in South Africa. This volunteer project will give me invaluable experience in my chosen field and for my degree as well potentially allowing me to use the data collected for my dissertation. My biggest passion has always been surrounding the ocean and the wonders it holds - both known and yet to be discovered and being able to contribute to this ever changing and important work is a dream come true. As I have progressed through my degree I have focused in on the field of marine mammals and this project is the perfect opportunity for me to get hands on experience with what a career in such a field consists of.
