Going to help young children in Zanzibar, July 2023!
My Travel Story
You're welcome to keep reading to find out more about the schools themselves.
Both schools are government-run primary schools, located on the outskirts of Zanzibar City which provide free education to students between the ages of 7 and 15. Fuoni provides a free education to around 3,240 students and Kijito Upele to around 5,830 students. Although both schools are administered by the government, they are severely underfunded and overcrowded. In fact, overcrowding is so serious that the schools have two sittings, with half of their students attending in the morning and the other half attending in the afternoon– thereby literally halving the children’s access to education. Class sizes average 100 students as there are not enough desks and chairs for everyone, students often have no choice but to sit on the floor. Fuoni has 16 classrooms and Kijito Upele has 22.
