My Travel Story

by: Hailee Vankoughnett Start Date: Feb 18, 2021 - End Date: May 28, 2021
I know there's a pandemic going on right now but there are still so many animals that are constantly abused, injured, or left behind by their family. In May of this year, I'll be travelling to Africa and spending 3 weeks volunteering at a wildlife orphange and rehabilitation centre.

Chipangali is a haven for wild animals that have little hope for survival in the wild. It is often the last refugee for those brought in sick or injured, and is a sancutary for confiscated animals. Their goal is to rehabiliate animals and release them back into their natural habitat, only if it is safe to do so. For those that can't be released, they are cared for by the orphanage and kept for educational purposes.

Why am I passionate about this project?
I've always had a passion for travelling and helping others and feel the best way to get to know someone is how they treat an animal. I absolutely adore animals and have always wanted to volunteer my time to help them in some sort of way. Habitats are being destroyed on a daily basis causing more and more animal species to become extinct and I think it's important to give back, especially when they don't have a voice to defend themselves.

Education is key in keeping animal species alive. I feel it's important to educate the public on how to treat and care for animals and that they shouldn't be taken for granted. Informing children at a young age is the best way to ensure generations to come continue to learn the importance of helping and protecting animals.
