My Travel Story

by: Christina Heinzman Start Date: Mar 23, 2021 - End Date: May 1, 2021
As a healthcare management and policy major, I study the ins and outs of the US healthcare system, both good and bad. Being in a classroom can only teach me so much and the rest can only come through experience and hands on learning. I have spent many hours in the classroom and in local hospitals within my community. This summer, I have been given the opportunity to intern and volunteer abroad in rural areas around Cape Town, South Africa. This trip will allow me to branch outside of my comfort zone and witness firsthand the compromised healthcare system of South Africa that has negatively impacted the quality of care, specifically in rural and under privileged areas. I will be working at a women’s health and education clinic that provides basic healthcare and education on disease prevention for women impacted by poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, and so much more. I hope to gain a more well-rounded outlook on the challenges of healthcare quality and accessibility by stepping outside of my own backyard.

While this experience is a great opportunity, the cost of travel and living in South Africa does add up. Any donation, both big and small, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
