My Travel Story

by: O C Start Date: Oct 7, 2016 - End Date: Apr 6, 2017
Hi everyone,

As many of you know, I will be travelling to Sri Lanka in January 2017 for six weeks to take part in a mental health placement with SLV. During my time there I will be working at a psychiatric facility and a rehabilitation centre to get hands on experience with individuals suffering with mental health issues. I will also be helping out with other projects run by SLV to gain experience working with people of all ages who have special needs and will be travelling to the north of the country to shadow a psychiatrist on a post-war outreach field trip where health professionals work to treat those with mental illness most affected by the recent 25-year civil war.

To find out more about these projects and the great work that SLV do please take a look at their website: https://slv.global/

SLV is a voluntary organisation which began in 2010 established by Lucy Nightingale, who joined forces with Yasintha Rathnayake, a former Sri Lankan youth worker, in order to provide recent graduates with practical experience in the area of mental health. The placement is designed for those wanting to gain hands-on experience working in the mental health sector and includes working with individuals suffering with mental illness, and attending workshops and field visits run by mental health professionals in Sri Lanka.

I am fundraising for this programme as my participation is completely voluntary and any money raised will go towards the fees required to take part. This is something that means a lot to me and I am looking forward to contributing to the work that SLV do in Sri Lanka.

Thank you so much for any donation you can make.

Love,
Orla
