My Travel Story

by: Jamie Mallam Start Date: Apr 9, 2018 - End Date: Jul 2, 2018
The first time I fell in love with Komodo Dragons was, of course, at my very first trip to the zoo as a 3 year old girl. I remember seeing it’s scaly, leathery skin as it walked into the sunlight, right before an immense crowd. A sense of superiority followed it across it’s land, and it wandered confidently, with it’s head held high. It’s tongue appeared once every couple of seconds or so, and it’s seemingly calm eyes scanned the flood of individuals. The sheer size of the lizard alone had me on my toes, but this was only the beginning. I learned of the lizard’s ability to kill prey with its saliva alone, and how it would only take one bite for this beast to bring down something as big as a water buffalo. I remember these facts to this very day, along with the feeling of amazement not just that day, but thereafter as I watched documentaries, read books and went to visit my newly found favourite animal. Little did I know that this passion would drive me to apply for a program such as the Shimongwe Wildlife Veterinary Experience, to share this special love of animals with others.

In this program, I will not only be able to develop my skills as a future veterinarian, but I will also have the chance to undergo a program allowing me to do something I've always dreamed  of, and that is to help animals who truly need it. This world today is home to hundreds of present species who are dying out as a result of poaching, human activity, climate change, etc. I want to make a difference, and that difference begins with this program, where I will be taught concepts that I can carry with me for the rest of my life, as well as through my future career. This project will also allow me to gain work experience, which is crucial when applying for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Postgraduate course. On top of this, the opportunity to visit an incredible new setting, South Africa, which is obviously very different to Australian land, would be an incredible experience in itself.

I'm asking for your help today, to share some support and aid me in undertaking this amazing journey.
